As Canada's largest metropolis, Toronto has a surprising number of outdoor activities within easy reach. Outdoor activities abound in and around Toronto, from skiing and running to hiking and bicycling. Toronto hiking is a great way to get some exercise and discover the city's hidden gems at the same time. Whether you want a leisurely stroll or a tough trek or scramble, there are many options for hikes in Toronto.

Here's a list of the greatest hiking trails in and around the GTA, so you can start planning your next outdoor excursion this Fall!

Evergreen Brickworks
Evergreen Brickworks is a former farm and brick factory in downtown Toronto. This Park currently has areas for community gatherings and pathways and trails open to hikers of all levels. Some of the ancient brick factory structures, as well as many green spaces, are interspersed with the park's concrete walkways. This interesting hike is a great way to go hiking in Toronto without having to leave the city.

Trail Length: 24 km

High Park Trail
High Park has some of Toronto's most beautiful urban walks for those looking for a more nature-based outdoor experience. High Park's concrete walkways, located in the city, are a convenient and accessible choice for people of all abilities, including children and dogs. A walk in the early morning or in the middle of the day will take you past the serene Grenadier Pond and through miles of shaded forest.

Length: 5.3 km

Scarborough Bluffs Trail
Scarborough Bluffs is a short, simple hike that looks like something out of a movie set in Greece. This gorgeous leisure area, which features high, jagged cliffs around a turquoise lake, is ideal for photographers and hikers looking for a true respite from the city grind. The trail leads to a little lakeside beach along Lake Ontario, where you may walk and take in the stunning bluffs.

Length: 6.8 km

DeCew Falls
A trek to DeCew Falls is a must for anyone who enjoys both nature and history. With a starting point near the Morning Star Mill, this lovely walk winds its way through the forest to a view of Twelve Mile Creek and a few stunning waterfalls. Hike down to the creek for a more difficult challenge. As a result, this trail is best hiked in strong hiking boots and preferably not after heavy rain.

Length: 2.3 km

The West Humber Trail
On the West Humber Trail, you'll find paved, hard-packed, and grassy paths all in one place. In tranquil gardens and woodlands, you'll trek alongside the West Humber River. Along the way, you'll pass by some noteworthy landmarks in the city's westernmost section.

Length: 19 km

Dundas Peak Trail
Dundas Peak Trail is one of Toronto's best hiking spots, with a historic mill as well as spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and Spencer Gorge waterfalls.

Length: 2.9 km

Lower Don River Trail
The Lower Don River Trail is one of Toronto's best hiking places for individuals who don't want to hike too far but still want to see nature up close and personal. This woodland walk parallels the Don River and, although being in the centre of the city, provides a true sense of seclusion. For obvious reasons, this lovely pathway features tranquil streams, easy paved paths, as well as some peace and quiet.

Length: 6.8 km

It is imperative that you are well-prepared before embarking on your next excursion for your own safety. With that being said, it's time to put on those hiking boots and venture outside the GTA.

Happy hiking!
